WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, ACT for America, an anti-Muslim organization that has been labeled a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, is holding “anti-Sharia law” marches in several states. The marches are being held during Ramadan, the most holy month for Muslims.

Asian Americans Advancing Justice (Advancing Justice), an affiliation of five civil rights organizations, issues the following statement:

“We condemn these marches as hate marches, as they only serve to further the anti-Muslim agenda of a known hate organization. From the president's repeated efforts to implement a Muslim travel ban, to the recent hate attack in Portland, Oregon that claimed two lives, Muslims and Muslim Americans are under increased threat. Groups like ACT for America are putting innocent lives and communities further at risk. We — as people of color, as immigrants, as civil rights advocates, and as Americans — denounce ACT for America and these marches.

Anti-Muslim hate and discrimination has skyrocketed this past year and continues to affect all members of the American community. We stand against hate groups that target Muslims, and we call on elected officials and community leaders to join us in explicitly denouncing efforts like these marches that seek to divide our communities and our nation.”
