Washington, D.C. – Late last night the House of Representatives approved $1.6 billion to begin building a border wall, part of the administration’s anti-immigrant agenda. In an effort to avoid debate on the wall, the money was slipped into an unrelated defense spending package.

Advancing Justice, an affiliation of five civil rights organizations, said the following in a statement released today:

“The House of Representatives let down the American people who are tired of seeing an endless attack on immigrants by this administration. By funding the start of border wall construction, the House has bolstered the anti-immigrant policies of this administration.

The building of this border wall will have a devastating effect on communities and the environment in the border region and is an unnecessary waste of taxpayer dollars. Instead of funding solutions that can fix our broken immigration system, the House gave in to the efforts to further demonize immigrants and curb the diversity that is part of the rich tapestry of America.

We are extremely disappointed that the House of Representatives voted to tear families apart and reinforce negative stereotypes about the immigrant community that come with approving border wall funding. We urge the Senate to remove this wall funding from the defense spending package and refuse to fund any attempts to fund this border wall.”
