Advocacy Communications Internship

Seeking a part-time intern fluent in Chinese (Mandarin) to engage with WeChat audiences

Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC (Advancing Justice | AAJC) has an opening for a part-time, advocacy communications intern. The internship requires an initial six-month commitment beginning in April 2019. The intern will receive an hourly rate of $15.00 an hour (20 hours per week) for his/her work. This internship requires onsite availability but some work may be completed remotely.

This is a great opportunity for a college student, graduate student, or recent college graduate looking to gain experience working for a civil rights organization. The advocacy communications intern will work closely with the director of strategic communications, the director of voting and census programs, and other relevant program staff to help monitor and research data, create content that will help shape public debate, and bring about change on policy issues impacting Asian Americans and other impacted communities.

Responsibilities include: 

  • Monitor and track the WeChat traffic regarding
    • census data disaggregation
    • immigration
    • affirmative action
  • Conduct research on civil rights issues such as census, immigration, and affirmative action
  • Assist with drafting in-language (Chinese) content (blogs, talking points, etc.) for WeChat audiences
  • Create strategy and engagement ideas with microbloggers and other influencers of WeChat audiences
  • Translate Advancing Justice | AAJC English-language content into Chinese for WeChat
  • Draft pitch emails in-language and articles for placement in Chinese ethnic media outlets
  • Assist with developing and implementing press strategies including writing press releases, op-eds, editorial board memos, and letters to the editor
  • Write content for social media platforms
  • Compile media lists and media clips
  • Assist with writing email action alerts

Qualifications and requirements:

  • Relevant college experience or Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or public relations
  • Fluency in Chinese (Mandarin) and the ability to read, write, and translate Chinese to English and English to Chinese is an essential requirement
  • Superior writing and editing skills with experience writing quickly and accurately on deadline, and the ability to translate complex concepts into everyday speech
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct thoughtful research and meet deadlines
  • Experience working as an intern or reporter for a newspaper, magazine or a nonprofit organization
