Mis/Disinformation Policy Analyst (Term Position: Two Years)

This role will assist the Assistant Director, Telecommunications, Technology and Media with conducting research and analysis on mis/disinformation sources.

Title: Mis/Disinformation Policy Analyst (Term Position: Two Years) 

Reports to: Assistant Director, Telecommunications, Technology and Media 

Term: Immediately  

Status: Full time, Exempt Employee, 40 hours/week 

Salary: $60,000-$75,000 


Position Summary: The Mis/Disinformation Policy Analyst will be primarily responsible for assisting the Assistant Director, Telecommunications, Technology and Media with conducting research and analysis on mis/disinformation sources and platforms; developing and implementing Advancing Justice | AAJC’s mis/disinformation campaigns and strategies; and combatting the spread of mis/disinformation that targets the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community and undermines our democratic values and traditions.



Organizational Leadership and Strategic Planning 

  • Act as thought partner to the Assistant Director, Telecommunications, Technology and Media to support and implement our programmatic agenda for the mis/disinformation portfolio and broader racial justice needs.  

  • Assist the Assistant Director, Telecommunications, Technology and Media and provide support with setting budgets, program goals and strategies, advancing new ideas and innovation that align with our organizational mission and the strategic plan.  

Mis/Disinformation Research and Analysis 

In collaboration with the Assistant Director, Telecommunications, Technology and Media, the Mis/Disinformation Analyst will: 

  • Assist with the development of research methodology and the launch of new research program. 

  • Regularly review content on various social media platforms to flag, document, and provide forensic analysis and research on mis/disinformation that targets and/or negatively impacts the AAPI community.  

  • Work with and manage in-language content monitors to research mis/disinformation cases and patterns in non-English AAPI languages. 

  • Coding and metadata analysis; identifying mis/disinformation trends and developing hypotheses about the patterns based on research. 

  • Design and create a database to track and organize findings; including integrating digital visualization tools for easy export to reports. 

Partnership and External Stakeholder Collaboration Management 

In collaboration with the Assistant Director of Telecommunications, Technology and Media, and Community Engagement Team, the Mis/Disinformation Analyst will:  

  • Identify existing community resources and organizations to develop and lead collaborative channels to share findings and receive feedback on progress of project and findings. 

  • Assist community partners and other allies as needed with technical expertise, analysis, and support. 

  • Co-manage subgranting and our working relationships with community partners who will contribute to data collection efforts. 

  • Regularly meet with and provide updates to other mis/disinformation partners and the advisory board with reports and incorporate feedback to regularly reiterate research process. 

External Stakeholder Engagement and Reporting 

  • Produce regular reports for technical and platform partners to draw attention to new emerging trends and problematic content, which necessitate expedited review and removal of content. 

  • Draft comments, letters, blog posts, and other written materials to submit for hearings and other opportunities to share findings. 

  • Participate in mis/disinformation seminars, speaking engagements, trainings, and working groups. 


  • Work with the Assistant Director, Telecommunications, Technology and Media, and finance and development teams to craft project budgets and contribute to the development of grant proposals relating to the Mis/Disinformation portfolio. 

  • Attend meetings and support organizational fundraising events and activities.

Education and Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science, Public Policy, Ethnic Studies, Media Studies, or other related field; Master’s Degree preferred. 

  • At least four-six years of work experience in data analysis and research, including working directly with community members, online fact-finding, organizing and distilling data, and conducting interviews. 

  • Previous experience working in a substantive area of tech policy, online forensic research, media manipulation, online proliferation of mis/disinformation is preferred. 

  • Languages preferred:  Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese (professional reading proficiency and cultural understanding). 

  • Project and team management experience. 

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities 

  • Ability and willingness to work independently, take initiative, and remain flexible in the development of a newly developed program 

  • Ability to operationalize vision, think strategically, creatively problem solve, exercise good judgment, and lead change.  

  • Successful track record of forging alliances and coalitions and moving people to take collective action and engage in advocacy. 

  • Facilitative and collaborative leadership style with strong people skills.  

  • Experience working with diverse groups from various sectors. 

  • Fundraising experience including building and developing relationships. 

  • Excellent communicator and writer who can articulate messages to different audiences, including translating law and policy into plain language and streamlining data analysis and other technical findings into vernacular and accessible formats. 

  • Data analysis, visualization, reporting, and presentation experience. 

  • Proven ability to work collegially with management and team members. 

  • Willing to adapt to changing priorities and balance competing assignments is necessary, while staying organized. 

Desired Qualification 

  • Experience and knowledge in Asian American and Pacific Islander, civil and human rights, tech policy, and mis/disinformation issues and history.
