Mee Moua, president of Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC, issued the following statement regarding the much-awaited passing of the Filipino Veterans of World War II Congressional Gold Medal Act of 2015 in the House of Representatives this week:
“After tireless work from dedicated individuals and organizations, the U.S. Congress has passed the Filipino Veterans of World War II Congressional Gold Medal Act that will finally recognize the brave Filipino-American soldiers who fought for the United States during World War II.
Advancing Justice ǀ AAJC applauds the original sponsors in the House and Senate, Sen. Mazie Hirono and Rep. Tulsi Gabbard. We thank the senators and representatives who co-sponsored the bills in the House and Senate as well as the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) for their commitment to ensure the heroic contributions of our veterans are rightfully honored.
We congratulate Filipino Veterans Recognition and Education Project (FilVetREP) and the advocates who worked so hard to see this victorious day.
The Filipino World War II veterans will join the ranks of military groups from other communities of color, such as the Tuskegee Airmen and the 442nd/100th Infantry Battalion, who have received the Congressional Gold Medal, one of the highest honors that can be given by the United States.
Advancing Justice ǀ AAJC marks today with much excitement in recognition of this triumphant victory for Filipino veterans and we look forward to the signing of this bill by President Barack Obama.”
