Advancing Justice – AAJC Responds to the Census Bureau Release of Apportionment Data

Washington, DC – April 26, 2021 – The U.S. Census Bureau, released its analysis for apportionment data based on the 2020 Decennial Census as mandated by the U.S. Constitution.
Asian Americans Advancing Justice – AAJC reacts with the following statement to the release of the data that will divide for each state the 435 member seats in the U.S. House of Representatives:
“Congressional seats for each state should reflect the populations they will be sworn to serve. What is at stake with this data and information is making sure our communities are fairly represented, no matter their political party.
A total of seven seats changed among 13 states according to the Census Bureau today. This apportionment data released reflects how this country’s population is changing and Advancing Justice – AAJC is watching intently for how the 2020 Census data analysis will affect the Asian American communities across this country.
Throughout the planning, counting, and processing phases of the 2020 Census, our message has been clear that with accurate census data our communities can get fair representation and appropriate resources for community needs such as money for schools so our kids can thrive in learning, improved public transit systems to get us to work safely, and better access to healthcare in every state.
Now that the apportionment data has provided each state with the number of representatives they will have in the next elections, it is up to each and every one of us to make sure those seats are filled by leaders who will reflect the diversity of this country and the diverse needs of the Asian American community.”
