Washington, D.C. — February 10, 2023 — After news broke of current U.S. Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh stepping down from the position, Asian Americans Advancing Justice – AAJC strongly urges the Biden Administration to select Deputy Secretary Julie Su as the next U.S. Secretary for the Department of Labor.
Asian Americans Advancing Justice – AAJC, issues the following statement of support:
“Advancing Justice – AAJC urges the Biden Administration to select Deputy Secretary of Labor Julie Su as the next Secretary of Labor. We first supported Su’s candidacy to be Secretary of Labor two years ago and we are confident that she can become an even greater asset to the Biden Administration and Department of Labor (DOL) at the helm. We have known Julie Su for more than 25 years, have deep knowledge of her work, and can say with unabashed confidence that she will serve American workers well in the position.
Julie Su has been an indispensable leader within DOL, working in lockstep with Secretary Walsh to advance President Biden’s agenda for a more inclusive economy. She is eminently qualified and positioned to further deliver on labor, workforce, and employment goals set forth by the Biden Administration.
Su’s decades-long career fighting for workers’ rights and ensuring their health and safety has produced a number of significant advances for all working people, including people of color, immigrants, and women. Her lived experience as a daughter of immigrants, a woman of color, and an Asian American make her uniquely qualified to serve in the Biden Administration, which at present does not have a single Asian American serving as the head of a Federal Department.
The selection of Julie Su for U.S. Secretary of Labor will further cement President Biden’s promise to have a diverse administration, including selecting immensely qualified people to cabinet-level positions.
