WASHINGTON, D.C.October 30, 2024 — Today, the Supreme Court allowed Virginia state officials to proceed with removing roughly 1,600 voters from the state's registration lists just days before the presidential election, threatening the registration of eligible voters. However, this is an egregious violation of the National Voter Registration Act, which prohibits the removal of voters from rolls within 90 days of an election.

Following today’s Supreme Court ruling clearing the path for Virginia to move forward with its illegal last-minute cancellation of voters, Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC’s President and Executive Director John C. Yang released the following statement:

“We are disappointed in today’s decision by the Supreme Court to allow Virginia to proceed with its eleventh-hour effort to remove voters from its registration rolls, many of whom are naturalized citizens and other eligible individuals, despite the decision by two lower courts to block that effort and the long-standing requirements of the National Voter Registration Act. We urge all voters, including those in Virginia, to check to make sure they are registered to vote where they live now and if they are not registered, to try to register in person at their voting location, if allowed.

"If voters run into any problems, or if they have any questions about their registration or the process, they can call the 888-API-Vote hotline, where voters can get accurate information about elections, receive assistance, and more, in English, Bengali, Cantonese, Hindi, Korean, Mandarin, Punjabi, Tagalog, Urdu, and Vietnamese.

"Amidst the ongoing, unwarranted, and unsubstantiated vilification of immigrants in our nation and in our elections, it is as important as ever that every vote is counted and every voice is heard – we urge voters to not give up in making sure their vote is counted. We reaffirm our ongoing commitment to protect the voting rights of all eligible voters this election season and beyond.”
