Advancing Justice – AAJC Releases New Resource to Help Communities Identify Anti-Asian Political Narratives

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Asian Americans Advancing Justice – AAJC (Advancing Justice – AAJC) released the report Belonging, Loyalty, and Legitimacy: Identifying Anti-Asian Political Narratives, a new online resource to help communities, organizations, researchers, journalists, and advocates recognize and respond to harmful political narratives targeting Asian Americans.s
Sim J. Singh Attariwala, Director of Anti-Hate Program at Asian Americans Advancing Justice – AAJC, said: “Anti-Asian political narratives are not always explicit. They often appear through veiled statements or questions about citizenship, assumptions of loyalty, or claims that one’s identity makes them somehow unqualified to lead. This resource empowers community organizations, journalists, researchers, and advocates with resources that offer a practical way to recognize those patterns, understand the harm, and react without amplifying the very messages they are trying to address.”
The release comes as the country enters an increasingly charged midterm election, where some politicians and political operatives are using hate narratives as a strategy to mobilize voters, divide communities, and distract from the real issues affecting people’s lives. These narratives often cast Asians , immigrants, and other communities in our nation as threats for political gain.
A growing body of research suggests a relationship between divisive political rhetoric and subsequent increases in hate crimes and incidents. For example, Anti-South Asian rhetoric has resulted in concentrated spikes of hate crimes against Sikhs and other South Asian communities. Advancing Justice – AAJC’s new resource helps communities recognize these recurring anti-Asian narratives and identify responses rooted in community safety, accurate information, and the right of all communities to participate fully in society.
The resource offers guidance on how to respond to harmful messages, choosing trusted messengers, avoiding amplification, artificial intelligence risks, documenting incidents, and remaining grounded in community safety.
