Asian Americans Advancing Justice - AAJC Condemns Efforts to Link Attacks on Asylum Policy to Supplemental Funding

Congress must focus on commonsense and bipartisan reforms to the immigration system—like a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants—instead of trying to restrict asylum

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In the wake of continuing negotiations around President Biden’s supplemental funding request, some anti-immigrant lawmakers are demanding extreme changes to immigration law be included in any supplemental funding bill, including poison pills that would gut the asylum system and create chaos at the border.

Asian Americans Advancing Justice – AAJC issues the following statement in response to those anti-immigrant proposals:

“Dismantling our asylum system during this moment of crisis, when so many people are seeking refuge and relief from persecution and violence, is simply unacceptable. We condemn any efforts to tie supplemental funding to these extreme, anti-immigrant proposals.

“These cruel proposals would make asylum a practical impossibility for most immigrants, sow further chaos at the southern border, and do nothing to help solve the crisis. For the many who are seeking refuge now, including a growing number of individuals and families from Asia, these proposals would mean a return to immediate danger and persecution, and in some cases, even death.

“Instead of working to destroy lifesaving asylum processes, Congress should turn its attention to resourcing the border in a way that keeps communities safe. To do otherwise would be to reject humanity.”
