Washington, DC – U.S. Representative Mark Takai passed away this Wednesday following a nine-month battle with pancreatic cancer. He was a first-term Democratic congressman, representing the 1st district of Hawaii.

Mee Moua, president and executive director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC, issued the following statement:

“Representative Mark Takai was truly a representative of the people, who always made time to show up at Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community events. He took seriously his responsibility to his constituents from the district, but he never forgot about all the other AAPI communities. He may have only been here for a short time, but his presence will be remembered for a long time to come.”
