WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, President Trump signed an executive order dismantling the Department of Education (ED) and moving its functions to other agencies. Plans to shut down ED began last week with sweeping staffing cuts1 to the department. Asian Americans Advancing Justice – AAJC (Advancing Justice – AAJC) strongly condemns the administration’s continued threats to students and educators nationwide. The organization issues the following response.

“The eradication of the Department of Education is a disgrace. For over forty years, it has provided critical funding, civil rights enforcement, school environment guidance, language access support, and research—among many other services—that have helped level the playing field for generations of American students. This is especially concerning for students of low-income and marginalized backgrounds, including 2.7 million Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander students who are often overlooked and discriminated against.

“The President’s attacks against public education do not serve anyone but the privileged few. It is an attempt to divide the country and suppress ideas he dislikes. The dismantling of ED leaves the futures of millions of students, their families, and educators uncertain, while reversing our progress and competitiveness as a nation. It is more important than ever to stand firm in our commitment to fight for equitable and accessible education opportunities for all students—because we all benefit when we all have opportunities to succeed.”
